SWWING RESTAURANT

Swwing Restaurant
Built-up : 1200 sft
Project Status : Completed (2023)
Location: Indiranagar, Bangalore

An existing structure, retained in its heritage fabric, receives a contemporary glass pavilion inserted within and above. The street elevation preserves ground-level retail maintaining historic storefront rhythm, while upper levels are fully glazed, allowing interior dining activity and warm lighting to animate the facade.

A multi-story glass greenhouse crowns the original building, its exposed black steel frame reading as a luminous beacon at night.

The upper dining pavilion operates as a transparent glass box with steel-framed glazing on all sides providing 360-degree skyline access. Exposed steel rafters support woven cane ceiling panels that filter daylight while moderating solar heat gain. Multiple dining zones distribute vertically, the rooftop pavilion features navy velvet seating and terrazzo flooring with aggregate patterns, while ground-level conservatory spaces employ double-height glazed volumes with checkered tile floors and custom timber cabinetry with curved profiles.

The design integrates natural craft materials, woven cane into ceiling panels and door insets, solid timber with organic curves, terrazzo with bold aggregate contrast, and polished dark marble work surfaces. Vertical green walls frame dining zones with tropical planting, softening hard architectural planes. Brass detailing appears consistently across table bases, lighting fixtures, and handrails, establishing material continuity. Arched openings and circular porthole windows create theatrical spatial transitions between zones.

The rooftop terrace demonstrates selective transparency, one facade opens fully to skyline views through clear glazing while the opposite integrates vertical green walls within arched openings, providing privacy and biophilic screening. Interior comfort and outdoor exposure dissolve through the glass envelope, creating simultaneous connection to sky and landscape.

Layered lighting transforms the space across diurnal cycles. Natural daylight penetrates overhead glazing, while evening illumination emerges from woven pendant fixtures, brass-mounted sphere globes, and integrated uplighting. The exposed steel structure creates graphic silhouettes at night, establishing the restaurant as an illuminated architectural landmark within its urban context.
